New Zealand Visa rules changes necessary to attract overseas nurses

Existing Visa rule changes are necessary to attract Overseas Nurses to New Zealand. As per The Aged Care Association survey, there were 500 vacancies for nurses in rest homes. This could further worsen as nurses in New Zealand have won a pay rises of between 12.6% and 16% making their recruitment very expensive.

Though many care homes pay good salaries, however, it was not much on an incentive considering the Immigration rules, as per the Radio NZ.

The current Immigration rules allow you to Apply for a Work Visa if your occupation is in the Long Term Skill Shortage List. If granted, the Visa allows you to live and work in New Zealand for up to 30 months. You can apply for Residence after completing 2 years. However, you cannot include your family while applying for the Work Visa. You would be eligible for the Resident Visa only if you have continued employment in New Zealand for at least 2 years. Also, your salary should be NZ $45,000 or above.

Deterring the nurses from bringing their families and the prospects of having to leave New Zealand after 3 years are demoralizing them.

Aged care is an essential part of the New Zealand social services. Older people are encouraged to sell off their properties and move into residential care. This is done to help with the housing shortage. However, with a shortage of skilled aged-care workers, the care homes are not able to expand.

There aren’t enough Nurses in New Zealand to fulfill the shortage. Aged Care is hard work and you need specialized nurses for the same. Also, the current Visa rules disrupt the relationship between the elderly and their carers when they need to leave New Zealand after 3 years.
