The Government of India has revealed that almost 1.7 lakh Jobs were created by Indian firms in the Asia Pacific region nations and it is in the economic interest of these nations to have liberal visa norms for India. On the other hand, very few Work Permits very utilized by the Indian nationals in these nine APAC nations that include Australia, China, New Zealand, Japan, ASEAN nations and South Korea. India raised this issue at the agreement negotiations with these nations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

The nation wise breakup of the jobs created by Indian firms is Philippines- 60, 000 jobs, Singapore – 40,000 jobs, Australia – 30,000 jobs, China 25,000 jobs, Japan – 8,000 jobs, Malaysia – 4,500 jobs and Thailand 3,000 jobs. These statistics were revealed by NASSCOM.

It has been a long-standing demand from India with these nations to liberalize IT sector visa norms so as to ensure that it is not just easy to avail visas for IT professionals but also have a stable regime for them.  The Government of India has also made other demands that include relaxed visa rules for the Film industry to assist Indian producers and a seamless movement for business travelers from India through a Travel card. The travel card is available for the nationals of the APAC nations but blocked for Indians, as quoted by the Times of India.

The Government of India is appealing to the APAC nations that not only IT Professionals from India contribute to the economy of these nations but Indian IT giants such as HCL, TCS, Wipro, and Infosys create thousands of jobs for them.

Visa curbs have been increased by these APAC nations of late. In fact, the Government of India has accused that Singapore government is not honoring its commitment to liberalize visas for Indians though it had agreed to this in the bilateral investment and trade treaty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently discussed the issue of visa curbs with his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull.

It was also pointed out by India that though there is provision by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority to approve 5% Overseas Immigrants to be employed if in case the exports accounted for 70% of a firm's business, Indians were finding it tough to obtain the visa. This is compelling Indian firms to avail Business Visas that are delayed by 15 days hampering productivity.
