Canada is offering 3-year Work visas to overseas students upon completing 2-year Diploma courses even as the US is restricting the job options for STEM students. As a result, large numbers of Indian students are now pursuing their overseas education in Canada. Conventionally many of them would have opted to study in the US.
Many overseas students who hoped to work in the US for longer period find that suddenly their wings have been clipped. This is owing to the latest interpretation of obligations of employers by the USICS. The training experience of overseas STEM students can now only be at own work site of the employer. This will curb their prospects to work for the business or tech consultancies, as quoted by the Times of India.
On the other hand, large numbers of students from India are opting to study in Canada. This is owing to the diverse diploma courses of 2 –year duration that is followed by 3-year work visas. These courses are also specialized and highly career oriented.
The latest interpretation of employer obligations by the USCIS hold good for OPT extensions of STEM students. The US is already witnessing a decline in the percentage of overseas students.
