'X’ Gender Designation will be implemented in Canadian Passports and Immigration Documents from August 31, 2017, enabling to choose neither of male or female options. This will be also applicable to the other documents that are offered by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It will enable people to identify with a gender that has not been specified, as quoted by the CIC News. Ahmed Hussen the federal Immigration Minister of Canada announced this introduction of X designation for Canadian Passports and Immigration Documents. He said that all the residents of Canada must feel safe to choose their gender identity.
They must also be able to express and choose their gender as per their choice. It has not been specified as to what the details of the interim initiative will include. However, it did explain that people will be able to add a specification to their Canadian Passports and Immigration Documents asking their sex to be specified as “X”.
This measure will be in place once the government prints new Canadian Passports and Immigration Documents with the option X along with M and F. The Immigration Minister of Canada elaborated that this is an important initiative by the Government of Canada. It will help in promoting equality for all residents of Canada irrespective of their expression or gender identity. This move is a part of the objective of the government to promote its agenda on inclusion, diversity, and equality.
The government elaborated in a statement that it will remain committed to working for developing a consistent strategy. This will be applicable to how programs display, use and collect gender and sex information. This will help Canadians to reflect their gender more accurately in the documents of the government and also safeguard their privacy.
