The US Now requires Social Media Information from Visa Applicants

Under the new US visa rules, applicants will have to submit their social media details to the US State Department. They have to give their social media usernames, their previous five years’ e-mail addresses and, phone numbers.

The rules proposed in March 2018 will come into effect soon. This will affect about 15 million foreigners who apply for US visas every year.

The US State Department wants these details for both its immigrant and non-immigrant visa forms. Applicants should provide details on their international travel deportation status. They must give information on any family member involved in terrorist activities.

The state department has made these rules to protect US citizens and promote legitimate travel to the country.

Applicants have to mention their account names on specific social media sites over the past five years. But applicants for diplomatic and official visas are exempt from providing this information.

The state department says collecting social media details will improve the screening process.
