The UK Retail industry has demanded an easing of points based migration system in the post-Brexit period. The British Retail Consortium has given its submission to the immigration review of the UK government being held by Migration Advisory Committee. It has said that the new system must be simple, quick and inexpensive for the non-EU workers than the existing points-based system.
The new immigration regime must also permit employees to travel for purposes of business with no requirement for visa or work permit. These demands of the UK Retail industry have been submitted by the BRC, as quoted by the City AM.
BRC has said that Brexit is an opportunity to shape a fresh and sustainable migration system. This must recognize the transforming scenario of retail. It must also have the faith of the people, it added.
The British Retail Consortium has said that the exit from the EU must be utilized to the optimum. The immigration system must be responsive to the labor needs of the industry at diverse skill levels. It must also collaborate with the industry to empower the local labor market with future skills, added BRC.
An immigration system that shuns complex processes must be established by the government. It must permit the UK Retail industry to quickly hire immigrant workers. The cost incurred by the businesses must also be minimal, added BRC.
The BRC said that it was tough to hire from local US market owing to the cost of employment as well the availability of ready workers. The unemployment rate in the UK is at 4.3% added the trade body. The cost of employment is increasing owing to the national wage for living. It is also owing to enhanced pension contributions and expenditure for apprenticeship levy.
The cost of technology is also falling. But there will be more roles for workers that require high-skills.
