Forensic science is an important element of criminal investigation. It involves collection and analysis of evidence which is crucial to criminal investigation and can be used as evidence in a court of law.
To succeed in the field of forensic science one must have interest in chemistry and biology and be good at problem-solving. Apart from a career as a forensic scientist, students can pursue careers such as analytical chemist, forensic computer analyst or toxicologist.
The UK has several institutions that offer graduate courses in forensic science. Here is a list of the top ten universities with entry requirements and unique features:
1. Dundee:
Entry requirements: BBB - BCC (including Biology and GCSE Maths and Chemistry at C/4 grade)
Unique features: After completing the degree students can pursue one of the many Masters courses at Dundee.
2. Keele:
Entry requirements: ABC - BBB (including Chemistry or Biology at level B grade and above)
Unique features: 96% of graduates passing out from here get employment within 6 months of graduation.
3. Bradford:
Entry requirements:(BBC including Chemistry at level B grade or above)
Unique features: Facilities include a dedicated crime scene facility and forensics laboratory.
4. Kent:
Entry requirements: BBB (including Chemistry, Biology or Human Biology)
Unique features: Crime scenes are created to help students.
5. Nottingham Trent:
Entry requirements: BBB (including Chemistry)
Unique features: Option to study abroad for a year at a university in Canada.
6. Glasgow Caledonian:
Entry requirements: CCC (including Chemistry, plus GCSE Maths and English at C/4)
Unique features: The university has state-of-the-art equipment to enhance the learning experience of students.
7. Huddersfield:
Entry requirements: BBC (with a minimum C in Chemistry)
Unique features: The course focuses on the real-world application of forensic science.
8. Coventry:
Entry requirements: BCC (and 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English Language, Mathematics and Science)
Unique features: The course gives students opportunities to undertake work placements.
9. Abertay:
Entry requirements: CCC (including Chemistry at A Level and GCSE Biology or Combined Science or Applied Science at C/4)
Unique features: The university has tie-ups with forensic laboratories.
10. Central Lancashire:
Entry requirements: Applicants are required to have between 104 and 112 UCAS points (including Biology, Chemistry or Applied Science)
Unique features: The university has recreated crime scenes to train students.
