Immigration after Brexit

Brexit has been in the process for quite some time now. Finally, it has happened! Now the eyes on the future of the UK also watch the developments in the UK immigration policy. This matters to Brits and the migrants alike.

The UK has left the EU on January 31, 2020. Brexit has started a new chapter in the history of Britain. It has also posed questions on the immigration policies of the UK. There was a boom in immigration to the UK since 1990. To keep it up and improve on it, Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, has presented a “people before passport” policy. He states that the UK will make it their committed practice to make UK immigration fairer.  It will treat people arriving from any place in the world equally.

Another major development is the implementation of a points-based immigration and visa system. It will allow immigration based on age, qualifications and study history in the UK. When applied on high-skilled migrants, it can work well! The new approach will suit the prospects with the bold march of the UK into an independent future.

The new system is facing some criticism though. Some doubt that the new system will restrict the employment chances of migrants. They may not get to work in most front-line social care jobs in the country.

The UK has also announced a Global Talent Visa. It intends to bring in researchers who are welcome to come and work in the UK. This visa will be available from February 20, 2020. Administered by UKRI (UK Research & Innovation), it will come as a replacement for the existing “Exceptional Talent” Tier 1 visas. The visa will not hold any salary threshold or eligibility. The researchers can even take their family members along!

The immigration policy must evolve to a stable one. It should happen within the transition period post-Brexit. The new immigration policies try to ensure that high-skilled migrants will not become difficult to hire. The points-based system is an Australian-style step in immigration. This hails it as a representative model of the future of UK immigration.
