US Legal immigration

The stage is all set for battle over US Legal immigration in the coming days even as US President Trump attempts to end what he terms as chain immigration. The bipartisan deal over budget has ended the short-lived shutdown of the government last week. The US Senate and House will now turn their attention to the future of Dreamers.

The immigrants who came as children to the US without documentation are protected temporarily under the DACA program. The attention of the US lawmakers will also focus on comprehensive reforms to the US Legal immigration.

At the core of disagreements between the Republicans and Democrats that resulted in the shutdown was the immigration. The deal that offered to break the impasse over budget could not arrive at an agreement over the Dreamers, as quoted by the Financial Times.

The US President Trump has supported a bill in the US Senate for the immigration numbers. It aims to reduce by more than 50% the numbers of family members that can be sponsored to the US by Green Card holders and US nationals. He has said that the focus of this bill will be to restrict sponsorships of legal immigration to the US for only minor kids and spouses.

Democratic Lawmakers have opposed the bill proposed by the Republican Party in the US Congress. This will be tabled as soon as possible in this month itself. They are on the other hand advocating two bipartisan bills in the Senate and House. These aim at offering amnesty to DACA immigrants and enhance security at borders. It, however, does not offer funds for the border wall or cover US legal immigration.

The Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has said that he will not table any such bill on the floor of the House. The reason is that he does not expect that the US President will sign any such bill, added Ryan.
