The US Senate has instantly rejected migration plans by Trump that includes the one supported by Trump to resolve the issue of Dreamers or DACA immigrants. Thus the future of 100s of 1000s of Dreamers is now again hanging in uncertainty.
Senators rejected proposals one after the other. Thus a week that began with hope ended into the same divisions. These have stopped the Congress from passing a legislative fix for the immigration system from decades.
The deficiency of harmony has now raised questions if any resolution for Dreamers can be reached at all, as quoted by the NY Times. In a reprimand to President Trump, the Senators crushingly voted 39 in favor and 60 against the bill backed by White House. It would have offered eventual citizenship pathway to 1.8 million Dreamers, ended the Diversity Visa lottery and toughened the legal immigration limits. This bill also provided $25 billion for building a wall along the Mexican borders for the US.
The division of votes in the Senate is a harsh reminder that US Congress continues to be paralyzed by the issue of immigration. G.W Bush and Barack Obama both tried to revamp the system through their migration plans as the former Presidents. But both were foiled by US lawmakers who chose to freeze into inaction. This was also partially due to powerful stakes on both the sides.
Republican lawmakers may be successful in approval of the bill in the House where they have the numbers and require a just plain majority to pass the bill. President Trump applauded the House bill and said that it encompasses his migration plans.
The White House later released a statement after the rejection by the Senate. It said that the Democrats are lacking seriousness for DACA immigrants and the reforms for immigration. They are not serious even about homeland security, it added.
