British Prime Minister disapproved for a freedom referendum for the Scotland prior to the UK’s exit from the European Union. This was condemned by Scottish First minister Nicola Sturgeon and she termed the referendum as a democratic indignation. Both the leaders have taken a completely divergent stand on the issue and are heading for a face-off. It is likely to make matters worse for the UK’s exit from the EU and intimidate the future of the UK as a nation, quoted New Indian Express.
Theresa May, however, went on to say that this was not the appropriate time to discuss the issue of Scottish referendum for freedom. She, on the other hand, did not deny the Scottish referendum in the future. Britain is commencing the two-year process for exit from the EU by the end of March 2017. Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England constitute the United Kingdom. The UK as a whole had voted in June 2016 to exit the EU, while Scotland voted against the vote with 62% and 38% for remaining in the EU.
It was announced by Scottish First Minister last week that she would seek a referendum on Scotland’s independence from the UK between the period 2018 and 2019. This will enable voters in Scotland whether they should leave the EU along with the rest of the United Kingdom or remain in the EU.
The British government led by the Conservative Party will have to, however, abide by a legally mandatory referendum and May said that this was not the appropriate time. She said that it was the need of the hour to concentrate on the exit talks with the EU and added that holding an exit referendum for Scotland at this juncture would hamper the UK’S exit talks with the EU. This will make it more difficult for the UK to secure an appropriate deal for itself from the talks including a deal for the Scotland, added British Prime Minter Theresa May.
Sturgeon, however, appeared undeterred by these statements and announced that she will be seeking next week with the Scottish Parliament to initiate the process of securing a new freedom referendum. She said that this was a democratic protest by Scotland aimed at the British government that was preventing the citizens of Scotland to have a choice regarding their future.
