Number of Indian skilled professionals in Germany surges

The number of Indian skilled professionals in Germany has risen, with most of its blue card holders being from the South Asian country.

In the first six months of 2016, India ranked top among the five countries that received the most number of the EU (European Union) blue cards with 22.1 percent of the total cards being issued to them. While Chinese received 8.7 percent of them, Russians and Ukrainians and Syrians getting 7.9 percent, 5.3 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively, the BAMF (German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) revealed.

Little India quotes the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees as saying that Germany grants the highest number of blue cards among all EU countries.

In fact, 85.5 percent of all EU cards were issued by Germany in 2015, in the entire of EU, it said. It added that France and Poland occupied the second and third place, respectively.

In the lower house of the Indian Parliament, the Ministry of External Affairs had revealed on 27 December that the Indian population in Germany was 169,602 in 2017. The other EU countries which have a substantial Indian origin population are Italy and Belgium where 197,301 and 18,404 people from this country reside, respectively.

The BAMF, in a statement, said that Germany had issued 8,670 EU blue cards in the first six months of 2016, an increase of 17.8 percent compared with the corresponding period of 2016, which saw 7,363 cards being issued. The number of German blue cards issued in 2013 and 2014 were 11,290 and 11,848, respectively.

With the EU blue card, nationals of a third-country who are university graduates or those possessing a comparable qualification, are given a residence title to be employed in a position that suits their qualification. When issued for the first time, this residence permit has a validity of maximum four years.

Of all the EU nations, the highest net immigration was witnessed in Germany from 1992 to 2015. The 2015 Migration Report said that immigration had risen by 46 percent as 2.14 million people arrived in Europe’s largest economy. In 2015, the number of Indian migrants who obtained selected residential permits in Germany for jobs was 4,968 2015, making them the largest number of recipients of these permits. On the other hand, for the same year, Americans and Chinese received 4,719, and 2,959 residence permits, respectively.
