New Zealand is urgently seeking 60,000 construction workers in order to cater to the need of constructing tens of thousands of homes annually. Immigration New Zealand has said that nearly 70% of the skill shortages jobs for long-term are associated with the construction sector. Thus there is much scope for overseas immigrants in this sector to migrate to New Zealand.
Gareth Kiernan the Economist at Infometrics said that increased hiring is needed to cater to the need of building homes in Auckland. This is more than the requirement of workers that was needed after the earthquakes had occurred in Canterbury. During these earthquakes, thousands of immigrant workers were hired to assist in recovery initiatives, added Kiernan.
As of now, there are around 256, 000 workers in the New Zealand construction sector. It however, needs 60,000 to 55, 000 more workers in the sector, as quoted by the Stuff Co NZ.
The requirement of 60,000 additional construction workers does not include the workers that will be required to cater to the Kiwi Build program of the Government of New Zealand. The average salary of architect graduates was around 80,000 $ to 40,000 $ in 2013. On the other hand, it is estimated that construction workers salary is around 51,000 $.
The rising salary of workers in the construction sector is reflected even in the UK. The average yearly pay for a scaffolder is now 40, 942 pounds while compared to an architect with 38, 228 pounds.
More than 50% of the 60,000 construction workers will require being trade qualified. Meanwhile, the largest training provider for the construction sector in New Zealand BCTIO said that it can offer the only 1/3rd of the required numbers.
