New Zealand immigration New Zealand immigration policy has emerged as one of the top issues for the September elections and both the major political parties are clearly opposing one another. Labor Party is going ahead with its assurance to decrease net immigration numbers by 20,000 to 30,000. It aims to achieve this partially by decreasing the number of overseas students for courses at the low level. New Zealand immigration policy of the Labor Party has been criticized by the National Party. It has said that Labor is jeopardizing the businesses, education and export industry. The immigration policy must facilitate to hire skilled overseas workers, said the National Party. Decreasing immigration numbers has backfired actually. So the National Party had to backtrack several of its proposed changes to immigration, as quoted by the NZ Herald. Immigrant workers now need to earn 41, 859 dollars annually which means around 6000 workers can remain in the nation. Michael Woodhouse clarified the New Zealand immigration policy of the Government by saying that to fill the increasing numbers of jobs of a growing economy the population can’t be strangled. There has to be a pragmatic and balanced approach said the Minister. Speaking on the New Zealand immigration policy Bill English the Prime Minister said that several businesses are struggling to recruit Kiwis. This is because they either fail in drug tests or never turn up, added the Prime Minister. Proposals to decrease immigration have been condemned as being reactionary by the United Future and ACT party. The immigration system must not be driven by the student visas or mutual work visas according to The Opportunities Party. It also intends to do away with the need for highly skilled overseas immigrants to possess a job offer to arrive at the nation.
