study abroad

There has been an incredible rise in the number of students going to study abroad in the last decade.

If you aspire to do so too, here’s what you should know before applying to study abroad.

  1. What do you want to study?

Instead of focusing on the degree that you want, concentrate on the course curriculum. You should know your career goals as what you want to study depends on your career choice.

  1. Course Structure

Universities abroad have different intakes, course duration, and teaching structure. These are usually determined by the professional requirements of the country. You should understand the course structure well so that you know what you are getting into.

  1. Admission requirements

Each University has different criteria for admitting students. You should ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria before applying. Some universities may require you to take up a test like the GRE or GMAT. It is advisable that you attempt the test at least six months to a year beforehand. This will give you enough time to prepare and obtain your required score before applying.

  1. Scholarships

Keep a tab on all the scholarships that are available and you may be eligible for. Applying early betters your chances of applying for scholarships.

  1. Research on current students and alumni

It is wise to track current students and alumni and know their career progression. Applications like LinkedIn have now made it easier to do so. Analyzing the career progression of an alumnus may give you a hint of what to expect from your course in the short term.

  1. Plan your finances

Research on the tuition fee and cost of living before applying to study abroad. This will ensure that you have your finances in place before applying to study abroad.

  1. Visa Norms

Visa regulations change from country to country. Do your research on what visas you are eligible to apply for a specific country. Also, check the post-study work visa options, if available, as per Entrepreneur.com.

  1. Language Skills

If English is not your first language, you may need to take up an English proficiency test. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to appear for the test so that you have the scores in time. Also, if you are going to a Non-English speaking country, try to learn at least the basics of the local language. It will help you smoothen your transition.

  1. Passport and other documents

Check the validity of your passport. Also, make sure that you have all other supporting documents in place to avoid last minute troubles.
