Immigrants to Canada below 22 years are now at an advantage for immigration programs from 24 October 2017. They will now be considered as dependents by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada for all immigration programs it administers. This is inclusive of refugees, migrants, and economic programs, as quoted by the CIC News.
Children below 19 years of age were only considered to be dependents for immigration programs from last 3 years. Children above 22 years will be considered as dependents in certain special cases. This will for dependence on parents owing to a mental or physical health condition.
Higher age limit will have enhanced positive impacts culturally and economically according to the Government. It will unite families and accentuate the economy of Canada. The nation will become a favored destination for skilled migrants who intend to keep the family together.
Minister of Immigration in Canada Ahmed Hussen said that increasing the age of dependents will keep more families united. Social and economic gains will also be enhanced, said Ahmed. Canada will emerge as the preferred choice for migrants and refugees added the Minister.
Ahmed Hussen elaborated that enhancing age limit for immigration programs is an evidence of being progressive. Similar measures by the Government of Canada include reforms to Citizenship Act of Canada. These ensured fast-track and easy transition of Canada PR holders to citizenship.
The age limit enhancement will not be applicable with retrograde effect. This will not be applicable for applications for immigration programs submitted before 24 October and after August 1, 2014. IRCC said that retrospective application of the change in age limit will halt the final decision of many PR applications. It will also slow down processing times for many programs.
