Donald Trump, the US President, on 9 January reiterated his support for merit-based immigration system, saying that America should only welcome people with a ‘great track record’. He was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying that he would want to see the words ‘merit’ being included in any bill that is submitted, as he averred that the US too should follow in the footsteps of Canada and Australia by having a merit-based immigration. Speaking at the White House during his meeting with both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, Trump said they should be having people with great track record entering their country, unlike the procedure being followed currently. Comments of Mr Trump were supported by several lawmakers. Lindsay Graham, a Senator, said he wanted merit-based immigration to be introduced to ensure that the US succeeds in the 21st century and added that he was keen to be very reasonable to the 11 million. He said that he didn’t want this to be repeated every 20 years. When Kevin McCarthy, House Majority Leader Congressman, said the amendment would focus on three pedestals —- DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), putting an end to chain migration and border security, he was interrupted by Mr Trump, who asked him to include merit in any legislation of immigration. The President said that if merit was added, he didn’t think anybody would be arguing against it as it would be unanimously supported. A legislation pertaining to this is expected to be tabled anytime in the second week of January. Restating his stance for border security, integral to which was the building of a wall along the border with Mexico, Mr Trump also urged for a bill to abolish chain migration. According to the US President, with chain migration, a lot of people are accompanying one and it is working against the country, and also called for the visa lottery system to be done away with. Mr Trump said that he was making an appeal to all the lawmakers present in the room to put the nation before their parties, and added that it was necessary for all to come to the table and discuss and arrive at a consensus.
