Change in the US migration policy has prompted action by Canadian MPs who have headed to the US. They have arrived in the US to avert a new wave of refuge seekers at the borders shared by Canada with the US. This is owing to the latest toughening of the US migration policy.
5,000 Nicaraguans have been put on notice by the Trump administration. Their temporary resident status will be revoked in 2018. Meanwhile, 86,000 Hondurans have been given an extension until July 2018. Their status could also be revoked after this period.
More than 200,000 Salvadorans are also keenly anticipating a decision on their status in the US. It is likely to be revealed in a few weeks.
Montreal-area riding representative Pablo Rodriguez is in the Texas to reach out to all the 3 communities in the US. This is after fake stories prompted several people to move illegally to Canada. They had left the US in fear of ending of their temporary status in the nation, as quoted by the CTV News CA.
Rodriguez said that Canada wants to ensure that people get their facts right. They must first understand the rules for immigration added the Canada MP. A call to quit the jobs, sell the houses and shifting kids from the schools must then be taken by them, said Rodriguez.
Provisional protected status safeguards people from being deported. It also gives them semi-legal status in the US. They can thus work or study in the nation. In case of major natural disasters, this status is extended to them. An instance for this is the Haiti earthquake that occurred in 2010. Deporting people in these circumstances becomes a potential breach of the civilized law.
In May 2017, US officials decided to give an extension of 6 months to Haitians. This was lesser than the normal extension of 18 months. It was cited as the major reason for the illegal crossover of hundreds of Haitians to Canada in summer. These chose to seek asylum in Canada rather than get deported to Haiti.
Earlier this year Canada MP Emmanuel Dubourg was sent to Miami by the Liberals. He was sent to combat the misleading information being spread then. Ahmed Hussen the Immigration Minister said that he is again being sent to the US for the same issue.
