As per the November Labour Force Survey [LFS] by Statistics Canada – released on December 4, 2020 – “Employment rose by 62,000 [+0.3%] in November, following an increase of 84,000 [+0.5%] in October. From May to September, employment grew by an average of 2.7% per month.”
The November LFS reflects the labour market conditions in Canada as of the week of November 8 to 14, 2020.
Following the trend since June this year, around 40,000 telephonic interviews were conducted by the interviewers in November.
From March 2020, all face-to-face interviews have been replaced by those conducted over the telephone.
While full-time employment rose by 99,000 in November, there was considerably less change in part-time work.
Since May, Canada has been replacing the initial COVID-19 economic shutdown with limited and target public health measures. This has led to the total hours worked rising by 1.2% in November.
As per the November Labour Force Survey [LFS], there were seen varying labour market conditions across the Canadian provinces, as well as in the industries.

By November 2020, employment in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia was found to have returned to the levels recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic.
While employment growth was seen in the 6 provinces above-mentioned, others provinces – Alberta, Quebec, and Saskatchewan – had the number of individuals with either a job or business at a steady level.
LFS estimates do not include the 3 Canadian territories.
Industry-wise growth in November 2020
The biggest gainers among the industries in terms of employment growth was seen in the industries of –

Goods-producing sector | +44,000 | +1.2% |
Construction | +26,000 | +1.9% |
While the number of private sector employees was little changed in November, the number of employees in the public sector in Canada grew by 32,000 [+0.8%] in November.
The employment growth in the public sector was driven chiefly by the increase in hospitals as well as elementary and secondary schools.
