The US Government has been sued for separating the immigrant couples by the American Civil Liberties Union. ACLU has said that the Trump administration is targeting immigrants who are looking to legalize their immigration status based on nuptials to US residents.

The lawsuit against the US government was filed in Boston’s Federal Court. In this, the ACLU has alleged that US Immigration Officers are unlawfully separating immigrant couples. This was in those cases wherein a non-national partner was looking for legal immigration status, as quoted by the Creative Tips.

Massachusetts ACLU Lawyer Adriana Lafaille said that the actions of the US government are not just illegal but completely inhumane, addressing a press conference. The lawsuit has been filed even as Trump has called upon the US Congress to stop authorized immigrants from sponsoring extended family members. These are transferred to the US through something which Trump terms as ‘chain immigration’.

The lawsuit has at the core of it the laws enacted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services during the rule of former US President Barack Obama. During this period the US administration was inclined to facilitate immigrants residing unlawfully in the US to search for legal immigrant status.

Specific laws were enacted by the US government in 2016. Through these, the spouses of US residents that are undocumented are allowed to pursue courses to avail waivers permitting residence in the US than being deported. In the meanwhile, they could also pursue PR as well.

The ACLU has elaborated in the lawsuit that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is targeting individuals pursuing such courses. In January it arrested 7 individuals while they were residing at Rhode Island or Massachusetts USCIS workplace.
