US opens new visa slots for Indians

The US Mission has added around 250,000 visa slots for Indian students, travelers, tourists, workers, and officials. This move aims to facilitate easy travel to the US from India, as visit visas are the backbone of the US-India relationship.

The newly added visa slots will help Indian visa applicants take interviews on time and expedite the visa process. US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have set an ambitious goal to improve the US Visa process from India. The US reported the arrival of around 2.4 million Indian travelers in 2024, marking a 35% increase over the same period in 2023.

Surge in Demand for US Student Visas from Indians

Recent reports by the US Embassies revealed an increased demand for US student visas from Indians during the student visa season in the summer of 2024. The US embassy processed a record number of first-time student visa applications, and most of them received appointments at one of five US consular sections around India.

According to reports by the US Embassy and Consulates in India, around 140,000 student visas were issued to Indian students in 2023, which is evidently more than any other country in the world. The US has set a new record for the third time in a row by issuing vast numbers of student visas.

Waiting Time for US visas

The US has been actively planning and implementing policies to cut down the waiting time for US visas and interviews, following the increased demand reported since 2021. The waiting time has been reduced to a year for US visit visa applications from India.

The US is now focusing on uniting families, streamlining tourism, and connecting businesses. Reports state that around six million Indians have already obtained non-immigrant visas to the US, and the Mission processes a thousand visa applications daily.
