Australia cancelled nearly 18,000 Student Visas in 2019. China accounted for the most number of Visa cancellations at 4,686. South Korea and India came second and third respectively with 1,503 and 1,157 Student Visa cancellations.
As per the Dept. of Home Affairs, this was the highest number of cancellations for Chinese nationals in five years. China had the most number of Student Visa cancellations in 2014-15 but also had the highest number of international students in Australia.
Australia granted 45,309 Student Visas to China last year.
Other countries with a high number of Student Visa cancellations were Malaysia with 1,107 cancellations and Brazil with 914 cancellations.

Other reasons for Student Visa cancellations are a change in the circumstances of an international student and a request for cancellation. International students who return home usually put in a request to cancel their Student Visa.
Alan Tudge, Immigration Minister, said that international students must abide by their visa conditions. You must follow the rules of your visa, no matter what country you come from. Failure to follow the visa rules results in the cancellation of your Student Visa.
In the first three months of the current fiscal year, Australia has already cancelled 4,500 Student Visas. Australia has been taking proactive measures against fraud education providers and agents. Hence, the number of cancellations has remained more or less the same over the years.
Australia had cancelled a record 19,685 Student Visas in 2015-16. In 2018-19, Australia cancelled 17,819 Student Visas of which 8,913 belonged to men in the 18 to 34 age group. 6,129 Student Visas were cancelled for women in the same age group.
Mr Tudge further added that even though the number of cancellation has remained steady, Australia has seen an increase in the number of Student Visa approvals. He said that the Student Visa Program is extremely important to the Australian economy. International students contributed $37.6 billion to the Australian economy last year. International students also helped support 250,000 jobs in Australia last year.
Mr Tudge also said that Australia is committed to maintaining its status as a preferred destination for international students. The federal Govt. has introduced several measures to encourage more international students to study at Regional Universities in Australia.
