Sweden prefers two types of language proficiency tests: TISUS and SWEDEX. These language tests are not mandatory but will increase the chances of migrating to Sweden. Sweden has several English jobs, so foreign nationals with English language proficiency have more opportunities. Two tests are required to measure proficiency in the Swedish language.
*NOTE: Foreign nationals seeking permanent residency from 2027 would be expected to have Swedish equivalent to A2 on the CEFR, equivalent to SFI level C.
TISUS, “The Test in Swedish for University Studies,” establishes eligibility for Swedish-language university studies. It is a qualifying test in Swedish for university and college studies in Sweden. TISUS is meant as a final test for Swedish courses. People with Swedish language knowledge can also take this exam to improve their scores in the language. TISUS includes reading comprehension, speaking and written composition.
TISUS exam is available twice a year is Sweden and abroad. TISUS is a proficiency test which also means there are no literature inclusive subjects.
The reading comprehension needs to be completed in 75 minutes and consists of general understanding and searching for information exam.
Writing takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The applicant is asked to write an independent and critical reasoning text about a particular subject from a general perspective.
The speaking proficiency test is to determine the candidate’s Swedish speaking ability. The test is identifying the communicative ability of the candidate. The speaking test is carried out in different places:
SWEDEX is a new series of examinations that measure Swedish language competency for non-native speakers. SWEDEX exam is focused on spoken ability and practical language.
