UK Indian community

UK Indian community is participating in the discussion on the Anti-caste law being introduced by the UK Government.  A London-based consultant Keval Bharadia said that till very recently his involvement in politics was negligible. But of late he began to campaign for the ongoing discussions of the UK government regarding an anti-cast legislation.

Mr. Bharadia said that he has a very significant personal experience due to the caste issue. His relationship with his partner was ended because of the strong objection of his family to the diverging caste statuses.

The Anti-caste legislation being proposed in the UK will not be applicable to personal relationships. However, including caste as an aspect of the race will have a larger impact in the society said Mr. Bharadia. It will influence beyond education and employment as well in a similar manner as other anti-discrimination legislations have affected attitudes comprehensively.

In March the UK government had revealed details of the much awaited public deliberations for including caste a part of the race in the anti-discrimination law. This issue has been a very emotional one for the large UK Indian community.

As amended in the parliament in 2013, Equality Act 2010 in its Section 9 mandates the UK government bring an auxiliary law to include caste as a part of discrimination based on caste and race. It, however, permitted for deliberations on the issue, as quoted by The Hindu.

The UK Indian community is actively involved now in persuading the government that amendments to the law are necessary. Caste Watch UK’s Chair Satpal Muman said that the strong response from the public has been very encouraging. Several personal experiences of Indians have persuaded them to get actively involved in the awareness campaigns, added Mr. Muman.
