Oxford was named the best university in the world while Cambridge was ranked the second-best.
This is said to be the first time that both the British Universities have been ranked right at the top globally by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2018.
In the bargain, they surpassed the US-based Ivy League universities and also the other reputed educational institutions of Asia and Europe.
While Oxford retained its first ranking, Cambridge improved its ranking from fourth to second.
Daily Mail quotes Phil Baty, editorial director of the global rankings, as saying that though UK higher education was under tremendous pressure politically, the data had shown that it still was home to some of the best universities in the world.
Ranked in the third position globally was the California Institute of Technology, while Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — both from the US — took the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The other UK Educational Institution to rank in the top ten was Imperial College London, which was rated the eighth-best university of the world.
About 1,000 universities across the world were judged on the basis of 12 parameters, which were classified into five areas — teaching, research, international outlook, industry income and citations.
Mr Baty said that the reason the UK higher education system was facing massive political heat was due to the questions being raised over the value for money being provided by tuition fees of £9,250, the flow of funding for research and levels of pay of vice-chancellors
lan Smithers, a professor at the University of Buckingham, said apprehensions that Brexit would hurt their leading universities images just seem to be false alarms.
