According to Eurostat, immigration rates in European countries have increased significantly in the past five years. In 2022, EU immigration was 5.1 million, recording a 117% increase in immigration rates compared to 2021.
The reasons behind such a drastic increase in immigration rates in the West include a significant decline in the working-age population and increased dependency rates in EU countries.
Around 20% of the total population consists of people aged above 65 years or older in more than 17 EU countries. The dependency rate in most developed countries was below 20% in the 1950s. Recent reports revealed that the dependency rate increased above 30% in Spain, Belgium, and the UK. Germany and Italy reported a hike of 35% in dependency rates in 2023.
An increase in dependency rates is caused by low birth rates and implies a decline in the working-age population. This is one of the major reasons for the increased immigration rates in these countries. Many EU countries look forward to immigration as a solution to fill in labor market demand in the countries.
