Indian Students get lured by degrees offered by American Universities

Indian students are increasingly travelling overseas for higher education due to the growing interest and awareness created with regard to the perks of Education from American universities, such as a flexible curriculum and scholarships, through studying in international schools. Institutions that offer skill-based and academic courses have been cropping up in India but have failed to attract the youth.

Latest edition of “the Open doors report” published by the IIE (Institute of International Education) states that the number of Indian students opting for higher studies in America grew by 29.4% (Academic Calendar 2014-2015). Ryan Pereira – Regional officer, USIEF (United States-India Educational Foundation), said in his statement that more and more Indian students are becoming aware of the academic opportunities overseas with 1,32,880 Indian student enrolments for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in American universities this year. Students also preferred to study in countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the UK and Singapore.

Hiren Rathod, a senior counsellor with the Imperial Overseas Education Institute, stated that a majority of the students choose to enrol in American Universities for postgraduate studies and a small number opting for Master’s degrees. An official at the British Council noted that British universities still got applications from a steady stream of students from India, with a large number of students appearing for UKVI and IELTS exams, despite the incidence of attacks on Indian students in the UK. He further added that the Council conducts seminars to counsel students who have safety concerns about their stay in the UK.

Rehan Kerawala, a student who will be pursuing an MA in Economics at the prestigious LSE (London School of Economics), stated that he had always aspired to pursue a degree in developmental economics at LSE. Rehan opined that apart from the course learning, he will learn life skills and be exposed to a diverse and multicultural environment. Director of the Energia Wellbeing Career Guidance Centre- Ambereen Pradhan, stated that courses like media studies, business, biotechnology, engineering and law were popular among students.
