Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the most popular standardized tests to assess the English-speaking skills of candidates who wish to study abroad.
One of the most important aspects of this test is the English-speaking section. You need to do well in it if you want to get an overall high score on the TOEFL exam.
While you prepare for the speaking section in the TOEFL exam, you should get to know the way it is structured.
In this section, your ability to speak in English well on varied subjects is assessed.
It comprises four tasks that involve generic topics that all applicants would be familiar with.
The tasks are classified as 'Independent Speaking Tasks' and 'Integrated Speaking Tasks' in campus situations and in various academic courses.
In the first task, you are required to speak for 45 seconds, and in the second, third, and fourth, you need to talk for 60 seconds each.
After you become acquainted with the speaking sections of TOEFL, you need to know how scoring is done. TOEFL examiners will grant you a score out of 4 for each of the speaking tasks. All your scores will be combined and then converted into a score ranging from 0 to 30.
TOEFL has a scoring standard to explain how you can get four on each of these tasks. The procedures for scoring take into consideration four categories.
The following are the features of responses:
Relevancy: When responding, you must talk about every feature of the prompt.
Pacing: Your response must neither be very slow or too hurried. You need to convey your point to the listener by pacing it naturally.
Fluency: You should respond continuously and coherently. You should not pause for long periods or constantly hesitate.
Grammar: Use standard grammar in your responses. Make use of basic as well as complex sentence structures.
Intelligible: Even if you stumble a few times while pronouncing or using grammar, ensure that the listener gets your message. It should not be lacking in clarity.
Organization: You should present ideas by developing them as you go along and making them easy on the ears of the listener.
Pronunciation: You should respond by pronouncing accurately. Stress and intonate the words and phrases properly. Speak with clarity so that you are easily understood. Do not put on a foreign accent, as it will not seem natural.
Information: in the Integrated Speaking Tasks, you should share details that are relevant to the passages.
Vocabulary: Your vocabulary while you respond must be wide-ranging. Choose words appropriately to suit your response.
