International students who wish to study abroad in an undergraduate course in countries such as the US, Canada, or Australia take the SAT or ACT.
Both these fulfill requirements for admission to colleges when students score high in one of these standardized tests. They also help students obtain merit-based scholarships.
Known earlier as the Scholastic Assessment Test, the SAT assesses students’ aptitude in writing, maths, and reading. The duration of this test is two hours and 14 minutes and comprises two major sections - Math and Reading and writing. Each section consists of two modules, where a specific number of questions are asked.
Eligible for SAT are students who have passed Class XII or higher secondary exams. Previously, until June 2021, there were the SAT subject tests, which have been done away with. Most colleges in the US do not require scores on these subject tests anymore.
American College Testing (ACT) is also a standardized test that students wanting to enroll in undergraduate courses to study abroad can take to be eligible for college admissions there.
The duration of the ACT exam is two hours and 55 minutes, during which about 215 questions are asked in four sections of English, Reading, Mathematics, and Science, besides the optional writing section.
Akin to the SAT exam, the ACT exam is accepted by colleges for admission to colleges in countries such as Canada, the US, and the UK, among others.
Educational institutions accept scores of both the ACT and SAT exams for admission to different undergraduate programs globally. Colleges compare scores of these standardized tests before offering applicants admission into their institutions.
It all depends on the colleges and courses the students opt for to decide which test they should take. Otherwise, both standardized tests are considered on par with each other.
