More foreign undergraduate students are going to Canada to study when compared to the United Kingdom (UK), according to the findings of an all-party parliamentary group in the UK. One of the main reasons cited by the students is the stricter immigration rules prevailing in the UK. The study was conducted to ascertain as to why other countries are being favoured over the UK.
On the other hand, the new dispensation in Canada has been proactive in encouraging immigrants to come to Canada. First, it increased target levels of total immigration and announced that it would explore ways to ease the immigration process for foreign students soon after they completed their studies.
John McCallum, Canadian Immigration Minister, recently announced that Canada would introduce more steps to lure students to Canada and make them permanent residents.
Canada also offers foreign students various options for applying for permanent resident status based on their study programme and the province in which they are studying. After a certain period following attainment of permanent residency, they are eligible to apply for the citizenship of Canada.
In certain instances, students graduating from an institution in one province can gain eligibility to apply under PNPs (Provincial Nominee Programs) in another province.
Besides immigration, there are some other reasons why Canada is preferred over the UK as a destination for studying. They include quality education at affordable costs, opportunity to work while studying or after completion of studies, safer environs and so on.
Some other benefits at Canadian institutions include transfer programs which allow foreign students at colleges to transfer to universities later; permission for foreign students to bring spouses or common-law partners with an open work permit; law allowing overseas students to get a Post-Graduate Work Permit valid for up to three years, following graduation, among others.
CBIE (Canadian Bureau for International Education) figures say that the number of foreign students in Canada increased by 83 percent between 2008 and 2014.
