The average gross salary in Hungary is about HUF 740,600 (approx. ₹2.15 lakh) per month for full-time employees. This figure comes from the latest monthly data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). It works out to roughly HUF 8.9 million (approx. ₹25.8 lakh) a year. Hungary has a lower cost of living than most of Western Europe, but Budapest is noticeably pricier than other cities. Rent is the biggest expense, followed by groceries, utilities, and transport. Knowing these costs helps you judge whether a salary offer is truly competitive.
Note: Many newcomers lower their rent by choosing districts outside the centre, sharing a flat in the first year, and using Budapest's wide public transport network.

Hungary applies a flat personal income tax of 15% to all employment income. Employees also pay an 18.5% social security contribution, which covers pension, health insurance, and labour market funds. Together, these take 33.5% of gross pay before any allowances. Employers separately pay a 13% social contribution tax on top of gross salary. Workers under 25 and some mothers with children qualify for income tax exemptions.

What are the most in-demand jobs in Hungary for the next 10 years?
Hungary offers moderate salaries with a low cost of living, which makes it a practical first step into the European job market. Looking at net income after rent gives a clearer picture than comparing gross pay alone. On that basis, Hungary often compares well with pricier Western European countries.
Pay is strongest in IT, engineering, finance, and healthcare, where skilled workers remain in short supply. Salaries still vary widely by city, experience, qualifications, and employer type.

The average gross salary in Hungary is about HUF 740,600 per month for full-time employees, based on the latest KSH data. That is roughly HUF 8.9 million a year. Average net pay is about HUF 519,900 per month. Professionals in IT, finance, and healthcare often earn HUF 1 million or more per month.
The average adds up all earnings and divides them by the number of workers, so high earners pull it upward. Hungary's average gross salary is about HUF 740,600 per month. The median is the middle value, with half of workers earning more and half earning less. At about HUF 611,400, the median better reflects typical pay.
IT project managers, cybersecurity specialists, data scientists, and senior software engineers are among the best-paid roles. Many earn HUF 11 million to HUF 21 million a year. Medical specialists and finance managers also earn well above the average. Most of these roles are based in Budapest and large industrial cities.
Hungary has two minimum wage levels. The general minimum wage is HUF 322,800 gross per month for jobs that need no formal qualification. The guaranteed minimum wage is HUF 373,200 gross per month for jobs that need secondary education or a vocational qualification. Both are reviewed every year.
Hungary applies a flat 15% personal income tax to employment income. Employees also pay an 18.5% social security contribution. Together, these take about 33.5% of gross pay, so a single employee with no allowances keeps around 66.5%. Family allowances and exemptions for under-25s and some mothers can raise take-home pay.
For a single person, yes, in most cases. Outside Budapest, an average salary easily covers rent, food, transport, and savings. In central Budapest, rent takes a larger share, so living a little outside the centre helps. Sharing a flat and using public transport can stretch your salary further.
Foreign professionals often earn similar or higher pay in IT, engineering, and multinational companies, especially in roles that need English or other languages. Pay depends on the role, experience, and employer, not on nationality. Highly qualified roles must also meet the EU Blue Card salary threshold where that permit is used.
A gross salary of about HUF 800,000 or more per month is comfortable for a single person in Budapest. It covers rent, daily costs, and regular savings. In cities such as Debrecen, Szeged, or Pécs, around HUF 600,000 gross is a realistic comfortable level, since rent is much lower.
Hungary's average salary is close to Poland and Czechia but well below Germany, Austria, or the Netherlands. However, living costs are also much lower. With a flat 15% income tax, net pay after rent compares reasonably well with many higher-cost EU countries.
It depends on the permit. The EU Blue Card currently needs a gross salary of at least HUF 1,001,048 per month, or HUF 800,838 for listed healthcare roles. Other permits, such as the Hungarian Card, have their own conditions, so check the rules for your role before applying.
