Foreign-born CEOs (chief executive officers) are likely to be unaffected by Australian government’s decision to Scrap 457 Visas as fears that talented candidates may be dissuaded from coming to the country and salary expectations of local candidates could be higher, aver business leaders.
The Guardian quotes the Australian Financial Review as saying that a reviewed list of occupations which were considered not eligible may probably be released in coming weeks as industry leaders expect their attempts to prevail over the immigration department to yield positive results.
Meanwhile, the Business Council of Australia said restricting CEOs to a two-year visa would lead to major hiring hurdles. Its spokesman said that for many of Australia’s multinational companies, it is vital that they have a CEO with the appropriate skills and experience to run major tasks. This is more likely to be present in overseas people.
Graham Bradley, The GrainCorp chairman, said changes to the visa regime would have an adverse impact on positions like chief technology officers, which require truly international exposure.
Meanwhile, the hospitality and tourism sectors are worried that the new barriers would hinder them from finding cooks and chefs and also accommodation workers in regional areas.
