India is the top source country for international migrants

175 lakh Indians now live abroad which is a massive increase from 66 lakh in 1990. As per the 2019 United Nations International Migrant Stock data, India is the top source country for international migrants. There were 2,720 international immigrants in 2019. Out of these, 175 lakh were Indians. The Indian diaspora overseas has been growing steadily over the years. As per the UN report, the top 10 countries of origin accounted for more than one-third of all international immigrants. As per the UN report, here are the top 10 countries with the most international immigrants:

3. China-107 lakhs
4. Russia-105 lakhs
5. Syria-82 lakhs
6. Bangladesh-78 lakhs
7. Pakistan-63 lakhs
8. Ukraine-59 lakhs
9. Philippines-54 lakhs
10. Afghanistan-51 lakhs

In 2019, India hosted 51 lakh international migrants. In comparison, there were 52 lakh international immigrants in India in 2015. India hosted 207,000 refugees accounting for 4% of the total international migrant population in the country. Among all international migrants, females made up for 48.8% of the migrant population with the median age being 47.1 years. The most number of international migrants in India came from Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan. Regionally, Europe had the maximum number of international immigrants in 2019 at 82 lakh. North America came second with 59 lakh international immigrants. Northern Africa and Western Asia cumulatively had 49 lakh international immigrants live in 10 countries across the world.  The US hosts the most number of international migrants with 51 lakh which is almost 19% of the world’s total. Germany and Saudi Arabia come in 2^nd and 3^rd respectively with almost 13 lakh international immigrants each. They are followed by Russia and the UK with 10 lakh international immigrants each. The UAE has about 9 lakh international immigrants and Canada, Australia and France have 8 lakh each. Italy has about 6 lakh international immigrants, as per the Economic Times.
