Germany witnesses an increase in individuals receiving German citizenships

Germany has witnessed a significant increase in individuals obtaining citizenship in the past five years, with over 651,000 people obtaining German citizenship from 169 countries.

 

Around 23.3% of the citizenships issued were granted to Syrians and Turks, totaling 151,995. Britishers were the third largest group of nationalities to become citizens of Germany, with more than 33,000 people acquiring German citizenship.

This indicates that 80,435 people or more than 12% of the new German citizens were citizens of other EU nations.

Naturalizations in Germany increased by 50.2% since 2018

56,435 people obtained German citizenship between 2018 and 2022, representing a total of 50.2% increase. Over the period of these five years, naturalization rates have been steadily increasing at about 29%.

 

14,108 people on average became citizens of Germany during this time and the year 2022 witnessed the most number of naturalizations at 37,180.

 

Germany has recently announced a new law for Dual Citizenship that the German parliament approved. As per the new law, foreigners can now hold dual citizenship, both their original and German citizenship. This shift may result in about 50,000 individuals acquiring German citizenship.
