DIBP Australia did not receive any recommendations for changes to citizenship from either the intelligence or security agencies and this includes ASIO and AFP. This was informed by the Citizenship spokesman of the Labor party Tony Burke. He further added that the DIBP Australia had briefed him on the proposed reforms by the government of Australia to the citizenship. The Labor party has intensified its attack on the proposed changes to Citizenship by the government of Australia. It has said that this will create an eternal class of people who will never be able to become citizens of Australia, as quoted by The Australian. Mr. Burke clarified that changes to citizenship were not recommended to DIBP Australia by the Australian Federal Police or ASIO or security or defense agencies. He further elaborated that the proposed changes to Australian citizenship had no relation to national security because the prospective applicants were already residing in the nation. Tony Burke cautioned that the proposed changes to citizenship will lead to division instead of integrating the Australian society. The changes include a stringent test for English language and increasing the residency requirement for Australia PR from one year to four years. Mr. Burke said that the bill placed in front of the Australian parliament is a fundamental and huge change. This cannot be good either for the security of the nation or social integration. A permanent group of people who work for all their lives being told by the government that they do not belong to the nation is dangerous, added Burke. Labor party has started a digital petition against the proposed changes to citizenship and this has already been signed by 30,000 people.
