Canada is a progressive country with robust human rights legislation that promises equality to all. Immigrants are a significant part of Canada, contributing to 100% of its labor force and 75% of its population.
According to Statistics Canada data, there were 4.2 million immigrant women in the labor market in 2022. 2.9 million of these women were visible minorities.
In the Canadian workforce, women have a participation rate of 83%. This is 30% more than what the country had in 1976. One in every four executive positions in Canada is occupied by a woman, and one in every seven is an immigrant woman.
The majority of immigrant women in Canada come through family-class sponsorship
1,215,200 women immigrants come to Canada as secondary applicants, such as dependents, spouses, or partners. In 2022, 620,885 women who came to Canada were principal applicants.
According to various data, about 66% of immigrant women are married or in a common relationship.
The federal government of Canada implemented the Pay Equity Act in August 2021 to close the wage gap to ensure fair compensation for women. Also, several provinces in the country have legislations to reduce the pay for women.
Under the Racialized Newcomer Women Pilot Program, the Canadian government has committed to investing about $6 million in additional funding to uplift the pay parity among racialized immigrant women.
