Can a skilled worker bring family to the UK?

Yes, a skilled worker can bring family members, including partners and children, to the UK as dependents after meeting eligibility. You are required to fill out a separate application for the dependents.

The category of dependants includes the following:

  • Wife, husband, civil or unmarried partner
  • child under 18 years old, even if they were born in the UK during the duration of the stay
  • child over 18 years old and presently living in the UK as a dependant

*Note: It is mandatory to provide evidence of your relationship with your dependent when applying for the visa.

What are the eligibility criteria for dependents for a UK Skilled Worker Visa?

The eligibility criteria for dependents are as follows:

Legal partner/ spouse

  • You and your legal partner must be married or in a civil partnership recognised in the UK.
  • You and your legal partner have been in a relationship and living together for a minimum of 2 years at the time of applying.
  • You and your legal partner have been in a relationship for 2 years at the time of applying but have not lived together due to reasons like studying or working in different places or if it is not approved in your culture.

It is mandatory to prove your commitment to each other if you are in a relationship and not living together by providing the required evidence as follows:

  • Talk to each other regularly.
  • Financially support each other.
  • Are compassionate and care for your children
  • Spend quality time as a couple, at events, or during holidays.

Child

To qualify for the visa, your child has to:

  • Be living with you in the same house unless they are studying at a boarding school or pursuing education at a university.
  • Not be in a committed marriage or civil partnership.

You, as a primary applicant, need to provide proof of the child's residence that includes:

  • Bank statements of the previous months
  • Credit card statements
  • Driving licence
  • A registration document of the NHS
  • Letter from the university or college

What funds do the dependents require to support themselves in the UK?

It is necessary that your children and legal partner have certain funds to support themselves during their stay in the UK. The required funds are as follows:

  • £285 for your legal partner
  • £315 for a single child
  • £200 for each additional child

You are not required to show proof of funds if:

  • You and your family have lived in the UK for a minimum of 12 months
  • You have a licenced employer willing to cover your and your family's expenses for the first month in the country (must be mentioned in the CoS).

How do you apply for a UK Skilled Worker Visa as a dependent?

Your child and your legal partner can apply for a UK Skilled Worker Visa as dependents online. Each family member must have an individual application and must pay the required fee to make a visa decision. As part of the application process, the dependents are required to prove their identity by submitting biometrics (photos and fingerprints) at the nearest visa application centre to receive a biometric residence permit. They have to create a UKVI account to scan and upload their documents.

How long does it take to process a UK Skilled Worker Visa application for dependents?

Once the dependents have submitted the application online, after providing biometrics and scanning documents, it takes around 3 weeks to get a visa decision.
