The ties between India and Iran have received a boost in the last few weeks. Tehran has offered a 1-year multiple-entry visa to Indian passport holders. This is despite the fact that India has stopped importing oil from it. India has also decreased the budget for the expansion of the Chabahar Port under the light of the recent US sanctions.
The multiple-entry visa aims to improve people-to-people contact as well as bilateral trade.
Iran has also extended the visa-on-arrival facility from 30 days to 90 days for Indians.
A Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty is also being negotiated between the two countries. The Treaty aims for stronger cooperation for citizens of both countries in legal matters, as per Economic Times.
V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs, told the Indian Parliament that an Agreement is under negotiation with Iran. The proposed Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance was discussed on 14th May in New Delhi by the India-Iran JCCM (Joint Consular Committee Meeting). The Agreement pertains to Commercial and Civil matters. The discussion was held in order to expedite the conclusion on the Agreement.
