From August 29, 2019, the E-2 visa reciprocity applicable to French nationals will be decreased from the existing 5 years (60 months) to 1 year 3 months (15 months).
The French consulate did not give any reason that prompted this change. Nevertheless, the French consulate did make it clear that those U.S. citizens that are seeking employment or residence in France on a reciprocal visa will be affected by this change.
As per the French consulate, the US. Citizens that wish to work or live in France on a reciprocal visit visa will be given reduced visas as an aftermath of the change made by the U.S.
Generally, the duration of time that the E-2 visa can be granted depends upon the agreement or ‘reciprocity’ between the United States and the applicant’s country. As such, the term of an E-2 visa greatly from country to country.

Citizens of countries that do not have a treaty with the U.S. – such as India and China – cannot apply for an E-2 visa. A roundabout way would be to become the citizen of another country that has a treaty with the U.S. and to apply for an E-2 after you get the citizenship of the country with the treaty.
Many in India that wish to apply for E-2, begin the process by taking up the citizenship of either the Caribbean nation of Grenada or Antigua in the West Indies.
