On January 8, 2021, the province of Alberta in Canada has held its first draw of 2021. A total of 50 Canada immigration candidates have received invitations – referred to as Notification of Interest [NOI] letters – from the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program [AINP] through the Alberta Express Entry Stream.

As the AINP’s Express Entry Stream is aligned with the federal Express Entry system, the ranking score or the Comprehensive Ranking System [CRS] score of the candidate is one of the key factors that determines as to which candidates receive NOIs. The minimum CRS requirement in the January 8 AINP draw was that of CRS 406.

Generally, Alberta has been known to invite Express Entry candidates with their CRS somewhere in the 300 to 400 range.

In 2020, Alberta issued a total of 1,785 NOIs to candidates under the Alberta Express Entry stream. The PNP allocation for Alberta in 2020 stood at 6,250. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta decided to issue no more than 4,000 nomination certificates in 2020. The limit on the number of nominations that the AINP can issue in 2021 has not been made available as yet.

Under the Alberta Express Entry Stream selection draws, the AINP regularly reviews candidates available in the Express Entry pool of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada [IRCC].

As per the AINP, “Based on available profile information in the portal, the AINP draws to select candidates from the pool, inviting them to submit a completed application to the AINP.”An Express Entry candidate that is successful in securing a Provincial Nominee Program [PNP] nomination is allotted 600 additional points towards their CRS scores. Hence, a provincial nominee is sure to receive an invitation – by IRCC in the subsequent federal draw – to apply for Canadian permanent residence.

From October 1, 2020, all AINP candidates – with the exception of those applying under the Self-Employed Farmer stream – can apply online through the AINP portal.
