Canada invites 3400 in the first Express Entry draw of 2020

The first Express Entry draw of 2020 happened on 8th January. Canada invited 3,400 candidates to Apply for a Permanent Residency in Canada.

The minimum CRS score in the 8th January draw was 473.

Canada launched the Express Entry Program in 2015. This program is the main source of skilled foreign workers in Canada.

The Express Entry Program uses the Comprehensive Ranking System to award points to candidates on factors like age, education, language proficiency etc.

A job offer from Canada is not needed to apply under the Express Entry Program.

Candidates who score the highest points receive an invitation from the Express Entry Pool draws to apply for a Permanent Residence in Canada. The Canada Govt. has a processing time of 6 months for Canada PR applications filed through the Federal Express Entry Program.

Canada has increased the admission intake target for 2020 and 2021. The target for 2020 is 85,800, which will rise to 88,800 in 2021.

The Express Entry Program also manages a portion of the Provincial Nominee Programs of Canada.

The intake target for PNPs in 2020 has been increased to 67,800. The intake target for 2021has been further increased to 71,300.

There are nine provinces and territories in Canada which have “enhanced” PNP streams. These streams are aligned with the Federal Express Entry Program and allow them to invite Express Entry candidates to apply for a provincial nomination. Most of these streams have no or a much lower CRS requirement than the Federal Express Entry Program.

Candidates can add 600 more points to their CRS score for obtaining a provincial nomination.

The 8th January draw was marginally higher than the previous draw held on 19th December which invited 3,200. The minimum CRS in the last draw was 469, which was four points lower than the latest draw.

The higher cut-off score can be attributed to the gap of 20 days that have elapsed between the two draws. It has been observed that when the gap between two draws is more than two weeks, the minimum required CRS score tends to rise.

The tie-break rule was employed in the 8th January draw too. The date and time used were 27th December 2019 at 13:35:09 UTC. All candidates scoring 473 or more who had submitted EOIs before the given time and date were issued an invitation.
