The United States DOS (Department of State) has announced the DV-2018, or the 2018 Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. A notice to this effect was published in the Federal Register website on 16 September.
The program authorised by the Congress offers visas to a category of immigrants referred to as ‘diversity immigrants.’ This has been instituted specially for migrants arriving from countries which have low rates of immigration to the US. Under this program, a restricted number of visa will be made available each year. For the fiscal year 2018, it has been decided to provide 50,000 diversity visas.
According to lexology.com, applicants would be chosen through a lottery and these visas would be distributed among six geographical zones Citizens of certain countries, from where more than 50,000 individuals immigrated to the United States in the past five years, would not be eligible to apply. Some countries which have been barred from this process are China, Brazil, Vietnam, India and Pakistan.
It was stated that online registration for the DV-2018 program would commence on 4 October at 12:00 pm EDT and conclude on 4 November at 12:00 pm EDT. Contained in the notice are FAQs and information about the diversity visa procedure and requirements that every applicant needs to satisfy. This program requires applicants to have a minimum high school education or a course equivalent to it.
