New Innovation Visa in Australia

In a recent announcement, the Government of Australia introduced an innovation visa to invite skilled professionals. The new visa is to replace the Global Talent Program, which was about to end in late 2024.

 

The Australian immigration system aims to attract skilled workers and talented professionals while keeping the inflation rate in check. Treasurer Jim Chalmers reported recent changes in the annual budget, which are also part of Australia’s overall immigration program.

Termination of the Global Talent Program

The Global Talent Program or the Australian Golden Visa program will be terminated. The discontinuation of the Business Innovation and Investment Visa Program (BIIP) will affect the pathway to Australian PR through investment.

 

The Government of Australia is to introduce stricter rules on student visas. A ballot system is to be implemented for the work and holiday visa for candidates from India, Vietnam and China from FY 2025.

Austria’s red-white-red card

The red-white-red card is a two-year-valid combination of residence and work permits. It attracts a large number of foreigners. 3,200 applications were approved for Austria’s red-white-red card in the first four months of 2024, an almost 35% increase compared to 2023. Recent statistics show an increase in the number of skilled third-country nationals moving to Austria for work purposes.  

Austria’s Labour Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) said that this number could rise to 10,000 by the end of the year, with the trend expected to experience an ongoing increase. The increased demand for skilled workers has been considered among the most critical challenges for Austria’s economy in the past few years. Figures from Statistics Austria, discovered that the number of unemployed people increased in 2023.

393,500 citizens were welcomed in Canada between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024. The citizenship intake in FY 2023-2024 surpassed last year’s intake of around 364,000 new citizens.

 

IRCC is celebrating Citizenship Week from May 13 to May 19 in an attempt to reflect on the significance of Canadian citizenship. Canada's immigration minister will attend citizenship ceremonies and visit organizations that offer newcomer services in Canada.

10-year Blue Residency visa

This Blue Residency visa was introduced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Prime Minister of Dubai. In a post on social media platform X, he said, “The year 2024 will be the year of sustainability. Today, we approved the “Blue Residency,” which is a long-term residency for a period of 10 years that will be granted to individuals with exceptional contributions and efforts in the field of protecting the environment, whether marine or land or the quality of the air environment, sustainability and its modern technologies, the circular economy, or other fields.”

 

He added, “The sustainability of our economy has become linked to the sustainability of our environment and our national directions in this area are clear and consistent.”

Golden Visas - Ten-year residency program

The standard residency visas in the UAE are generally valid for two years. However, in 2019, the nation introduced a ten-year residency program known as Golden Visas, targeting investors, scientists, entrepreneurs, exceptional students and graduates, and humanitarian leaders, among others. The U.S. State Department said it has increased its capacity to manage the demand through technology and streamlining services, such as removing in-person interviews for some applicants. The agency issued a record-breaking 205,000 visas to temporary and seasonal workers in agriculture and other sectors and 25,000 employment-based visas in the first quarter of 2024.

The number of immigrant visas also increased rapidly. The agency also broke records by issuing 152,000 green cards to immediate relatives of U.S. citizens, breaking all previous records for the six-month period.
