Going abroad is a dream for many in India.
With the many visa and immigration consultants proliferating all over India, it is indeed hard to sift the honest from the fraudulent.
Many a times, schemes that guarantee your being sent abroad in no time whatsoever, are simply visa scams.
One such case was reported recently from Ambala in the Indian state of Haryana.
Paramjit Singh of Barara town in the district of Ambala recently filed a named report against three individuals for duping him of INR 35 lakhs in the name of sending him abroad.
As per Paramjit Singh, the three – Surjit Singh a.k.a. Makhan, his wife Paramjit Kaur, and Mohanjit Singh – had promised to send him to the U.S. on a work visa.
How to avoid visa scams?
With the advances in technology, criminals have become too sophisticated with the ways and means for fleecing unsuspecting people.
Every year, many visa scams are reported worldwide.
Tips for avoiding visa scams include –
Fulfill all accompanying conditions of your visa. Always take note of the specific requirements of the visa that you enter any country on.
Stay away from outcome-focused visa scams. Often, fraudsters will promise too-good-to-be-true deals. Remember that no one can guarantee you a visa. To grant a visa or to reject it is the sole prerogative of the Government concerned.
Educate yourself. Always take the time to conduct a thorough research online. Unmistakable red flags are when you encounter any situation where – there is no contact information available on the college or university’s website, no one is reachable even if the information is given, or if details are not given.
You will be held accountable for your actions. In order to get a student visa, some students go ahead with a dubious institution even when they know that it is fake. Be mindful that using a real visa for attending a fake university is a crime in the U.S.
Explore free resources. The official websites of the immigration departments of many countries offer free downloadable resources. Almost all official websites have the option of downloading forms.
Be clear from the beginning. It is always advisable to be clear as to your options once you complete your studies. Be clear and specific with yourself.
Ask yourself:
Answering such questions even before you begin your studies will let you have perfect clarity as to your options post-graduation.
Trust your gut feeling. Even if after your research, something does not feel right, it is not worth pursuing.
Visa and immigration require a substantial investment, both in terms of money as well as time. Taking the time to research well will save many a regret later.
