UNIX System Administrator
A UNIX systems administrator must be knowledgeable with the UNIX operating system. This is imperative, as the duties of this administrator include installing, configuring, and maintaining the UNIX operating system and all other applications as needed.
Recognize and troubleshoot problems with server hardware and applications software.
Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade UNIX server operating systems and applications.
Establish and document standards and procedures.
The educational requirements for this position are typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and there are IT certifications that many UNIX system administrators will hold, such as COMP TIA A+ certification, but it is not a requirement throughout the information technology industry.
