Human Resource Manager

Overview:

Human Resource (HR) managers work with a team of professionals to support a company’s growth and operation. HR managers oversee daily operations, business planning and budget development for human resources programs.

Tasks:

Advice and coach managers on HR policies and programs including employee relations issues.
Manage daily departmental operations, business planning and budget development of HR programs.
Ensure policies, procedures and HR programs are consistently administered, aligned with organizational goals and are in compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements and laws.
Plan, manage and coordinate all human resources initiatives; recruitment, compensation, benefits, training and employee relations of an organization.

Expertise:

An undergraduate degree in business, human resources, or a related field is usually required for HR managers as well as several years of experience in the human resources field.
Other combinations of education and experience that provide the rudimentary knowledge and skills to function efficiently in the role may be an acceptable substitute.
The BLS refers to human resources as “interdisciplinary” work, for which a bachelor’s degree serves as an entry-level requirement. Recommended coursework, according to the BLS, includes business administration, organizational development, labour relations and behavioural and social science. Certification in specialty areas such as business administration and training to enhance career growth opportunities, as does general HR competency certification from the Society for Human Resource Management.
