The IELTS test

IELTS is one of the most reputed English language tests. The IELTS exam tests applicants on four modules- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The IELTS exam lasts 2 hours 45 minutes.

  • The Listening and Reading modules are made up of 40 questions each.
  • The Writing module is split into two writing assignment sections.
  • The Speaking module is a viva voce which will be conducted by an examiner. The examiner will ask questions about the topic to probe your English skills further.

How is the test taken?

IELTS is a traditional pen and paper exam. The Speaking test is conducted in-person by an examiner.

Scoring:

For each module, you are graded from 1 to 9. The average of these scores is presented as your overall band score. Typically, a band score of 7 is considered the minimum by most countries and colleges.

The PTE test

The PTE test is conducted by Pearson Education and is a popular English language test. It is based more on American English than British. It is split into 3 parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening. The PTE exam lasts 3 hours.

  • The Speaking and Writing module requires you to speak into the computer and complete essay writing assignments.
  • The Reading module offers fill in the blanks, multiple choice and comprehension assignments.
  • The Listening module requires you to summarize spoken text, write from dictation and perform other listening assignments. probe your English skills further.

How is the test taken?

The PTE exam is an online test conducted on a computer. There are no in-person examiners.

Scoring:

You are graded on a scale on 10-90 for 10 parameters that assess your Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening, Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary and Oral Discourse. Your overall score is based on these individual scores. Typically, a minimum score of 65 in Speaking, Writing, Reading & Listening is required by most colleges & countries.

When are scores released?

PTE scores are released 5 days after your test.
