Countries from Which Students May Be Accepted on a Full-Fee Basis
International students who are meeting full tuition costs themselves may be accepted from any country. Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia and students from the Cook Islands, Tokelau or Niue who are New Zealand citizens are eligible for enrolment in educational institutions under the same conditions as New Zealand students. International students may
enroll only in courses which have been approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) or an organisation with delegated authority. The institution or establishment must also be accredited by NZQA to provide the course. This does not apply if the course is of less than three months duration. The New Zealand Immigration Service may revoke a student permit (accessed on a case by case basis) if an international student withdraws from a course of study at an institution.
Choosing a right place to Study
Finding the right place to study is vitally important for students and their families as the decision to come will have long term effects. New Zealand has welcomed international students to its institutions, by scholarship and as paying guests.
Most international students now come to New Zealand to further their education without Government help. They pay the full cost of their courses, or receive help from family, friends, home country, or sponsors such as United Nations agencies. These options are much wider today than ever, in New Zealand's universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, secondary schools and private institutions.
Many students come to New Zealand for specific degree, diploma or certificate courses. Some come to undertake post-graduate study or research. There are also those who come to learn English, a language which is vitally important worldwide in many areas of work, especially in trade and commerce.
New Zealand is an English-speaking nation, and visitors and students often find the New Zealand accent easy to understand. All have the opportunity to learn and share a wide range of unique experiences in a growing country.
