FAQs on studying in Germany
Education System
What is the German degree known as?
Most universities and technical schools award the title “Diplom”, which is a degree that qualifies one professionally. In other words, one can start working after obtaining a Diplom. In terms of comparison, a  Diplom is a little higher than a Bachelor’s degree and a little lower than a Masters degree.  Diploms offered by technical schools (Fachhochschule) are identified by the abbreviation (FH) after the diplom. E.g., Diplom-Ingenieur (FH). The "Staatsexamen" is the qualification required for certain state-supervised professions, such as law, medicine, pharmacy, and so on. German universities and colleges also award international qualifications, namely "Bachelor's" and "Master's" degrees, for many degree courses.

What conditions do I have to meet if I want to study in Germany?
You must definitely provide proof that you hold a qualification that entitles you to study in your home country, i.e. a secondary school leaving certificate. This secondary school leaving certificate must be recognized in accordance with the Evaluation Guidelines proposed by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Culture (KMK). Under certain circumstances you will be required to attend a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) where you can gain necessary additional qualifications before commencing your studies. Information on this is available from the Foreign Student Offices.
