Overview
There is a global war for talent, with an increased shortage of qualified professionals. IT, Engineering, Chartered Accountants, Teachers, Healthcare, Trades, Banking and Finance professionals are being actively sourced by overseas employers.

The UK government is making it easier for shortage occupation professionals to enter the workforce through the Tier 1 Program.
Canadian Immigration along with Human Resource Development Canada has expedited the process for qualified professionals and skilled IT workers to work. IT professionals do not require validation from HRDSC.
France has introduced it’s Skills & Talents Permit & Denmark has introduced the Danish Green Card. The EU Blue Card is soon to be launched in early 2010.
Barriers
(Top)Work visas allow professionals to enter and work overseas temporarily. The visas are usually granted for 4-5 years. These visas can be converted to permanent residence visas. However, work visas are employer dependent. Candidates wanting to go overseas not only require a job offer but also need to be sponsored by these employers. Employers should meet the statutory obligations of the immigration office to be eligible to bring overseas employers.
The process of sponsorship approval is time and document intensive making employers shy away from recruiting overseas professionals. Unless there is an acute shortage of skills, employers prefer to recruit candidates holding legal visas to live and work.
There are also work restrictions for candidates wanting to explore other job opportunities. Candidates are expected to work for the sponsoring employer only and in the occupation nominated.
